３．１．あそび

前章まで、乗り物による移動のうち、時空間を圧縮する性質と近代社会との関係に注目することで、乗り物の交通メディア的機能について考察してきた。そしてこの考察によって、定住生活に大きく貢献してきた乗り物が同時に近代的合理主義の臨界点において私たちの社会にノマディックな生活のビジョンを投影しているという現状の概観が描けたことと思う。この章では少し見方を変えて、交通のための実用的な用途のほかに、乗り物のもつ娯楽や快楽としての自己充足的な側面をとりあげたい。

例えばドライブの場合、ドライバーにとってある種の悦びとして感じられているのは、運転しているということであろうか。移動しているということであろうか。あるいは、散歩と同じく自己目的的であるがゆえに社会的に無目的的で非実用的であるという、半定住・半放浪の行為性だろうか。おそらくいずれもそれぞれの意味で、遠からず的を得た要因なのであろうが、こう言っただけでは何処か判然としないままであるように思われる。特に、定住／遊牧／放浪といった具合に個人の生き方が乗り物によって選択可能なものになるのだとしたら、これは＜遊び＞というもうひとつの側面から移動することについて考えてみる必要がありそうだ。

遊戯のシーンにおいては、乗り物に乗ることや乗り物で移動することそのものがひとつの目的となる。移動において、目的地へ向かう乗り物は言うまでもなく合目的的な行為主体であるということができるが、一方の移動空間にいる私たち自身は無目的的で怠惰な実存である[注７]。しかし交通メディアとしてではなく遊戯として用いられるときだけは、私たちが乗り物に乗る行為は合目的的なのだ。車窓の風景を楽しむ鉄道旅行や豪華遊覧船による世界一周旅行などのシーン、それに乗用車でドライブにでかけるときには、移動することそのものが私たちの楽しみとなっている。このような遊戯のなかでももっとも基本的なものは、散歩である。乗り物が私たちの足となったことで、交通における実用性や生産性だけでなく散歩という行為もまた拡張されているのだ。

人と乗り物との関係はいつでも、人が乗り物を操縦し、乗り物が人を運ぶという相互的な作用にある。人を運ばないものはラジコンくらいのものであり普通これは乗り物とは言わないし、人が運転しないものは、エレベーターや一部の新交通システムぐらいのものであって、これも操縦の必要がないのではなくて、自動システムによって必ず監視・制御されている。乗り物にとって操縦ということが常に重要な問題であるのは、私たちが速度というものを処する必要があるからだ。交通整理や速度管制といった高度なシステム維持の技術によって、複雑で手におえない＜流れ＞は予測可能なものとして私たちの手で処されていなければならない。

こうした技術の中にゲーム理論的なゲーム性（ある種のゲーム性）を見出すことで、乗り物は遊戯の中に組み込まれる。すなわち、運転の技術を競い合い、いち早くゴールという目的に達するために効率的なプロセスを探し出すのが、レースという形態での乗り物の遊戯である。

どんな遊戯でも、そこには必ずルールが設定されているものだ。私たちは、できるだけ近しい条件のもとで遊戯者らが競い合う公平さの前提のもとに、異なる結果が生じてくることに遊戯の魅力の一端を見出すことができる。遊戯者にとっての行為の自由性というものは、ルールと目的との間に存在していて、そこに遊ぶ余地というものが生まれる。もとをただせば、＜あそび＞とはこうした隙間そのもののことを指し示す概念なのである。

ルールと目的とは、レースにおいて考えれば、レギュレーションと速度であると言い換えることが出来る。ラップタイムの向上あるいは勝利といったことが当面の目的であることを暗黙のうちに了解している遊戯者は、ゴールに向かって高速の達成を目指す。しかしこういった要求とはまるで正反対に、目的的な意志をある水準にセーブするためのレギュレーションが遊戯の枠組みとして機能している。抑制の働きかけは、公平さを保持するための他律的なルールとして、あるいは遊戯者が自らの安全を守るため自主的に高速運動から辞退する意志として、遊戯の中にあらわることになる。

目的意識の奨励と抑制という互いに矛盾した要求が発せられながら、その狭間にかろうじて残った余地において遊戯は成立している。自動車によるレースがドライブと異なるのは、それがスポーツか純粋な遊びであるかというところにある。ドライバーは、レースにおいては＜あそび＞としての行為の触れ幅を出来るだけ狭め、目的へ近づこうとするが、散歩的なドライブに興じる場合はルールや目的はできるだけ自分の行為から遠ざけて遊んでいる。

速度を操縦する技術に関する＜あそび＞の構造は、遊戯のシーンだけでなくて実社会での交通にもあてはまる。遊戯において＜あそび＞を消滅させる試みがスポーツマンシップという名の目的志向的な態度であるように、実社会において実用的な利便性、効率性、生産性を追及するのが近代的合理主義という名のフロンティア精神である。

だからもしも、現代における速度管制の技術が近代的なフロンティアを目的として掲げたうえでなされるものであるならば、＜あそび＞の精神はわたしたちの社会から駆逐されてしまうことになるだろう。まったく速度向上の考えが失われるということはないにしても、たしかに今、速度社会は効率化から定常化へと方向を見つめ直さなければならない臨界点に差し掛かっているのである。

近代から近近代にかけて＜生産から消費へ＞と社会のモードが移行したことを、労働と余暇という対概念に置き換えてみれば、＜仕事から遊びへ＞と個人生活のモードが移行したことに当てはまるだろう。現代ではこれが、＜向上から安定へ＞といった具合に生活の質に対する視点を変化させなければならない必要に及んでいる。「追いつけ、追い越せ」とばかりに自らの技術を競い合う時代は終わろうとしているのだ。
